City of Montgomery adopts new official city flag

The redesign followed a public contest and review process, replacing a 1952 banner with symbolism tied to Montgomery’s history, unity and progress.

The Montgomery City Council announced it approved a new official flag for the City of Montgomery during Tuesday’s council meeting. The city’s flag had remained unchanged since 1952. The new flag will take effect October 1, 2026.

The City Council’s Governmental Affairs and Administration Standing Committee led the redesign effort. The committee launched a public contest inviting residents and designers to submit concepts representing Montgomery’s identity, history and future.

The committee received 27 submissions, and 10 designs met the contest guidelines. It selected five semifinalists for further review before ultimately choosing a design submitted by Joshua Gordon, with several modifications incorporated into the final version.

The newly adopted flag includes several symbolic elements intended to reflect Montgomery’s “heritage, leadership and continued progress”:

  • Red diagonal bands representing momentum, movement and the city’s evolving story.
  • A blue ceremonial ribbon stretching across the flag, representing renewal, unity and new beginnings.
  • Nine old gold stars honoring Montgomery’s nine City Council districts.
  • A central outlined star symbolizing Montgomery’s role as Alabama’s capital and serving as a beacon of unity and leadership.
  • Olive branches above and below the central star representing peace, resilience, growth and goodwill among Montgomery residents.

The new design will replace all existing official City of Montgomery flags beginning October 1, 2026.

The approved design proof accompanying the resolution includes the final layout and color scheme selected through the public review and committee process.
