William Edge Thigpen, longtime State Representative, dies at 83

Thigpen served as a state representative for 12 years and as the assistant director of the ABC Agency for 13 years.

William Edge Thigpen, 83, of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on June 8, 2024, at his residence.

Born on December 2, 1940, in Alabama, William was the son of the late Frank Thigpen and the late Mildred Edge Thigpen. He dedicated much of his life to public service, having served as a State Representative for 12 years and as the Assistant Director of the ABC Agency for 13 years. A proud alumnus of Troy University, William played basketball for four years during his time there. He also had a distinguished military career, retiring as a Major from the Army National Guard after 28 years of service.

William is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Thigpen; his daughter, Vicki Thigpen (David) Dodd; his sons, William Edge Thigpen, Jr., and James Britt Thigpen; his sister, Frances Benson; his brother, Frank Thigpen; his sister-in-law, Lisa Whitstine; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Matthew, Hunter, Presley, Brittany, Sophia, Ava, Alora, William Ira, Mary Burkett, Bennett, Wilder Edge, and Vivi Cole.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mildred Thigpen, and his mother-in-law, Mary Burkett.

Friends will be received on Saturday, June 15, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Greenville, Alabama. A service to celebrate William’s life will follow at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Bro. John Girdley.
