Bill Britt: Democracy cannot survive competing realities

Bill Britt examines the erosion of shared truth, arguing that democracy cannot survive when citizens live in competing versions of reality.

In the second installment of his new commentary series “This Matters,” Alabama Political Reporter publisher Bill Britt explores a growing challenge facing American democracy: the erosion of shared truth.

Titled “When Lies Replace Reality,” the episode examines how public debate has shifted in an era when facts themselves are increasingly disputed and competing versions of events spread rapidly through politics and media.

Drawing on nearly two decades covering power and politics through Alabama Political Reporter and The Voice of Alabama Politics, Britt argues democracies can survive disagreement but cannot survive competing realities.

“Self-government rests on one fragile foundation,” Britt said in the video. “A shared understanding of truth.”

The episode continues Britt’s “This Matters” series, short commentaries examining the deeper civic principles behind current political debates.
