As Josh Coleman, the LGBTQ+ liaison and deputy director for the Division of Social Justice and Racial Equity for the City of Birmingham, has been selected as one of 205 leaders for the 2024-2025 Obama Foundation Leaders program. This prestigious program trains participants around the world in leadership development and civic engagement, equipping them with the skills to drive impactful change across public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Coleman will be one of 100 leaders participating in the Leaders USA program.

“Josh Coleman’s leadership has been vital in our efforts to promote equity and inclusivity in Birmingham,” said Mayor Randall L. Woodfin. “His selection as an Obama Leader is a testament to his commitment to our community and the important work he continues to do. I’m confident that this experience will allow him to bring even greater insights and energy to his role, and we’re excited to see how his participation in this program will benefit Birmingham.”

Coleman has been instrumental in advancing inclusive policies and promoting equity across Birmingham. His work focuses on ensuring that all residents have equitable access to resources and opportunities, particularly those from underrepresented communities. The Obama Leaders program will enable Coleman to further develop his leadership capabilities, which will in turn strengthen his efforts in creating meaningful, sustainable progress in Birmingham.

“I am deeply honored to be selected as part of the 2024-2025 Obama Leaders program,” Coleman said. “This opportunity will allow me to grow as a leader while bringing new ideas and strategies back to Birmingham to continue advocating for justice and equity. I look forward to working alongside a global network of change-makers who share a common goal of creating a more inclusive and just world.”

As part of the six-month program, these dedicated change-makers will convene virtually each week for interactive sessions designed to help them drive change by honing their leadership skills, building relationships with their peers, and engaging with thought leaders and members of the Obama Foundation community. They will also have opportunities to participate in various virtual experiences and special events, including one-on-one conversations with experienced mentors from the Foundation’s global network.

The Obama Foundation Leaders USA Program, now in its second year, draws on the Foundation’s ‘Hope to Action’ curriculum, inspired by the leadership values and approach of President and Mrs. Obama. The program supports Leaders in engaging diverse perspectives, building collective power, and making tangible, sustainable progress toward a better world, with a particular focus on strengthening democratic culture in the United States.
