Alabama Department of Transportation warns of text scam

Anything you receive claiming to be a toll collection effort from ALDOT is a scam, according to ALDOT.

STOCK

The Alabama Department of Transportation said Monday that they are aware of an ongoing scam that is being relayed over text messages.

“Anything you receive claiming to be a toll collection effort from ALDOT is a scam,” ALDOT said, continuing, “The text message, which was not sent by ALDOT, may claim you are subject to legal action if you do not pay outstanding toll fees. If you have received a text claiming to be from ALDOT and saying you owe a toll, it is a scam.”

The Federal Trade Commission reports that clicking a link in a scam text can lead to a phishing attack, in which the scammer tries to take one’s personal information, credit card information or more.

If you received one of these texts: Don’t click on any links or respond to the text; report the unwanted text using your phone’s “report junk” option or forward it to 7726 (SPAM).

“You can help friends and family by warning them about this ongoing scam,” ALDOT shared.
