Former Alabama Farmers Cooperative CEO Tommy Paulk released a statement Tuesday through video offering his strong endorsement of Ron Sparks for commissioner of agriculture. Sparks won two consecutive terms, serving from 2003-2011, earning high praise and recognition from both Republican and Democratic majorities in the Alabama Legislature for his leadership as Ag Commissioner. Paulk is now retired after 19 years leading AFC.
In a video statement released, Paulk summed up why Ron Sparks is his unquestioned choice to return to the commissioner’s office.
“I have never known a public servant who displayed more courage and more willingness for the people of Alabama, even when it was against his own short-term political interests,” said Paulk. “I can’t imagine anyone, whether it’s a farmer or anyone else who is associated or impacted by agriculture in Alabama, not supporting and voting for Ron Sparks.”
“I’m deeply honored to have Tommy Paulk’s endorsement,” Sparks said in a statement. “He has been an exceptional leader and advocate for Alabama agriculture.”
Sparks commented further on Paulk’s endorsement of his leadership.
“They elect you to make hard decisions and put people first. My job is advocating for both Alabama producers and consumers. So, whether it’s identifying and opening new markets for our farmers, ranchers, or aquaculture industry – or it’s protecting every Alabama family from unsafe products shipped to our state, I take the responsibility of this job seriously and work hard to get it done right.”
Sparks said he believes his experience and leadership during times of crisis is particularly important at this moment.
“The farmers of Alabama are hurting badly right now. We are on the verge of losing many of our family farms. They face soaring costs for input factors, such as fuel and fertilizer. Then on the other side of the equation, they have lost markets and aren’t getting nearly as much as they should when their sell their crops or livestock. I will sit down on my first day in office, bring folks together from across agriculture, industry, and our communities, and we will put effective strategies in place to solve problems.”
Sparks is running unopposed in the primary and will not appear on the ballot until the November 3 general election.
