SPLC to host “Vote in my Honor” event to boost turnout

The Southern Poverty Law Center will host an event Saturday titled “Vote in my Honor” on the Alabama State University Campus to encourage voter engagement.

Panelists will celebrate the strides Alabamians have made in the fight for voting rights and discuss ways to continue that fight.

Rev. Dr. Viola Bradford, a former chaplain at Tutwiler prison, will discuss the work done to lay the foundation for modern voting access and the similarities of the obstacles currently facing voters.

JaiGregory Clarke will connect the threads between voting, employment, housing and felony disenfranchisement.

State Sen. Kirk Hatcher, D-Montgomery, will discuss the 2023 redistricting battle in the state legislature and the importance of establishing a state Voting Rights Act.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Montgomery Interpretive Center on the ASU campus.
