Alabama is set to receive $52.14 million as part of the Department of the Interior’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue (ONRR) 2024 disbursement, totaling $16.45 billion across federal and Tribal lands. This year’s overall revenue disbursement ranks as the fourth largest since ONRR’s inception in 1982, with three of the top four years occurring within the past four years.
This substantial distribution supports a wide range of initiatives, allowing states and Tribes to invest in public infrastructure, conservation projects, irrigation, hydropower, and historic preservation. For Alabama, these funds could be instrumental in advancing local projects aimed at environmental preservation and enhancing public facilities.
The 2024 disbursement breakdown includes $1.18 billion allocated to Tribes and individual Indian mineral owners, $3.09 billion to the Reclamation Fund, $1.01 billion to the Land and Water Conservation Fund, $150 million to the Historic Preservation Fund, $413 million to federal agencies, and $6.32 billion directly to the U.S. Treasury.
ONRR also distributed $4.29 billion to 33 states from revenues generated by oil, gas, renewable energy, and mineral production on federal and Tribal lands and offshore regions, particularly benefiting four Gulf of Mexico states, including Alabama. New Mexico led with $2.88 billion, followed by Wyoming with $590.92 million and Louisiana with $163.47 million. Alabama’s allocation places it alongside neighboring Mississippi, which received $52.60 million.
The revenues provided to 33 federally recognized Tribes and approximately 31,000 individual Indian mineral owners represent the full revenue from energy and mineral activities on Indian lands. Tribes leverage these funds to develop community infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other essential services.
ONRR has distributed over $387 billion since 1982, relying on royalties, rents, and bonuses collected from energy and mineral companies operating on federal lands and waters. Detailed data on the disbursements can be accessed on the Natural Resources Revenue Data portal.
This significant contribution underscores Alabama’s role in the national energy landscape, bolstering state and local projects to support sustainable growth and development across communities.
