Department of Public Health to hold vaccination clinics in some counties

It was unclear Tuesday how much vaccine the state would be sending to these South Alabama counties.

The Alabama Department of Public Health on Tuesday announced plans to hold COVID-19 vaccination clinics in eight South Alabama counties for those currently eligible to receive vaccinations.

Those currently eligible are healthcare workers, long-term care residents, those 75-years-old and older, police officers and firefighters. ADPH asks those who are eligible to call the vaccination hotline (1-855-566-5333) to make an appointment. Vaccinations are free.

Meanwhile, the state’s supply of vaccines remains low, according to public health officials and a UAB doctor who spoke to reporters last week. State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris told reporters last week that the state gets between 50,000 and 60,000 doses each week from the federal government, but said the supply isn’t adequate to meet the demand. Harris said many of the state’s doses currently in supply are for required second doses, and can’t be used for first shots.

The federal government is expected to announce an approximately 16 percent increase in shipments of the Moderna vaccine to states, according to The Washington Post on Tuesday.

As of Monday, the state had administered 266,306 of the 448,900 shipped to Alabama providers, according to ADPH. The federal government has also shipped 74,100 doses to be administered to long-term care residents through a federal program. Of those doses, 377,711 had been administered as of Monday.

Vaccination clinics are to be in the following counties:
